Homes for America will present at the March 19, 2024 General Membership meeting. A brief presentation is attached with details about this upcoming affordable housing project.
The Clare Court campus was acquired by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi in 1916 to create the St. Elizabeth's Home for "Female Colored Orphans". It provided living space for approximately 300 children and the sisters who provided their care and education. The orphanage closed in approximately 1960 and the building was renovated to serve as a school for children with special needs and a residential high school. The building also served as the Franciscan Sisters of Baltimore motherhouse, novitiate and infirmary for elderly sisters.
In 2004, Clare Court I was completed, reusing a portion of the original convent building to offer 30 units of affordable housing. In 2019, the Sisters fully vacated the property and sold the rest of the land and convent to Homes for America in Summer of 2023.
The plans for Clare Court II involve rehabilitation of the existing units and amenities, creation of 12 additional units in the convent building, and new construction of 41 units in a separate building.
